WELCOME MESSAGE FROM THE CONFERENCE CHAIRMAN, STEPHEN DALE:
I think most of us working in the information industry would agree that the recession has bitten deeply into most organisations and has focused minds on efficiency, value for money and how to get more from less.
Survival is all about being innovative with the resources we have, developing new and more effective ways of working and creating products that will sell in an increasingly competitive market. Adapting to a changing environment is no easy task but one that also offers abundant opportunties for the information professional and this year's conference gets to the heart of these issues.
Although we may look back on 2010 as a period of massive change and uncertainty, there are exciting times ahead. This year's conference will demonstrate that the social media revolution continues, with evidence that organisations are finding new and innovative ways of connecting with their customers and reducing operational costs. Twitter has become ubiquitous; Facebook (you either love it or you hate it) continues to grow; real-time search is a ‘must have' in many web and enterprise services, new applications and platforms that help us to connect, engage and collaborate appear almost on a daily basis. Could anyone have predicted the success of the iPad this time last year?
And what changes might this bring to our personal and private lives as we start to break free from the constraints of a desktop PC? To debate the issues we have a brand new track looking at how mobile devices are being used to deliver information services.
Added to all of this is the demand for more transparency in public services; people want to know they are getting good value for their money, and governments are stepping up to this challenge by making more data available and providing opportunities for citizens to create added value from open and linked data stores.
Has there ever been a better time to be an information or knowledge professional? Challenging, bewildering, exciting; however you view the future you can be certain that change and innovation is accelerating. New leaders are emerging with the vision to adapt or change their business models to embrace the opportunities created by the social web and the cloud.
With this in mind we've come up with four strong tracks:
• Exploiting open and linked data
• Harnessing opportunity from the social web and the cloud
• Information Professionals demonstrating value and impact
• New platforms and user behaviours for delivering content
To challenge your thinking and broaden your horizons we are delighted to have secured Dion Hinchcliffe, to open this year's conference. Dion is a well known Fortune 100 business strategist and enterprise architect; author of numerous books, white papers, and articles on Web 2.0 and top Social Media & Collaboration expert and Consultant.
We can promise 3 days of thought provoking sessions that will signpost emerging trends and prepare you and your organisation for the knowledge and information challenges of 2011.
I look forward to seeing you at the conference.
