TRACK 2: ORDER OUT OF CHAOS - CREATING STRUCTURE IN OUR INFORMATION UNIVERSE
Semantics (open data movement) in publishing - opportunity or threat?
THE SEMANTIC WEB - ULTIMATE LOSS OF CONTROL FOR PUBLISHERS
What part will publishers play in a pure semantic web world, where facts are wholly unbundled, folded and twisted into new forms by autonomous software agents? Can the information economy embrace the vision of free open fact based computing, where websites are as anachronistic as LP records or printed journals? This paper will examine the current state of publisher platforms and datasources, with an emphasis on the value added by publishers in the online publishing process. We'll examine the how the paper driven publishing model limits utility for end users, and see how users are voting with their digital feet for value added services which meet their real world needs. Publishers can learn many lessons from Web2.0 services, and we'll examine drivers for change in e-publishing, using the central theme of taking control, and how the power of technology is shifting the balance of power. From this we'll take a low-tech view on what the Semantic Web really is, the opportunities it offers, finishing with some key recommendations for action now.
